In ‘Juste une illusion’ (naar de discohit van het trio Imagination) volgen we de bijna 13-jarige Vincent in het Parijs van 1985. Gevangen tussen kibbelende ouders, een bazige oudere broer en zijn eigen ontluikende puberteit, worstelt hij met identiteit, religie, vriendschap en zijn allereerste verliefdheid. Deze komedie vangt die intense levensfase waarin alles mogelijk lijkt en waarin de droom om de wereld te veranderen nog geen illusie is.

Regisseurs Olivier Nakache en Éric Toledano leerden elkaar in de jaren negentig kennen en werken sindsdien vrijwel onafgebroken samen als scenaristen, regisseurs en producenten. Hun films – onder meer ‘Intouchables’ en ‘Hors Normes’ – staan bekend om hun menselijkheid, toegankelijke humor en aandacht voor sociale thema’s. ‘Intouchables’ was een van de grootste bioscoophits van de afgelopen jaren en ook deze nieuwe film is hartverwarmend, energiek en – mede door een heerlijke soundtrack – vooral erg aanstekelijk.

Set in Paris in 1985, ‘Juste une illusion’ (named after the disco hit by the trio Imagination) follows Vincent, who is on the verge of turning thirteen. Caught between his constantly bickering parents, his bossy older brother, and the uncertainties of adolescence, he struggles with questions of identity, religion, friendship, and his very first crush. This charming comedy beautifully captures that intense stage of life when anything seems possible and the dream of changing the world has not yet become an illusion.

Directors Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano first met in the 1990s and have worked together almost continuously ever since as writers, directors, and producers. Their films—including The Intouchables and The Specials (Hors Normes)—are renowned for their humanity, accessible humour, and sensitive exploration of social issues. The Intouchables was one of the biggest box-office successes of recent years, and this latest film is every bit as heartwarming and energetic. Buoyed by a wonderful soundtrack, it is above all an irresistibly uplifting crowd-pleaser.
